A Memphis med student has died after a cancer charity walk

A a medical student was shot to death after a breast cancer charity walk in Memphis over the weekend and her ex-boyfriend is facing charges as the alleged shooter, officials said.

Ellie Claire Young, 22, was killed in Shelby Farms Park, just outside of Memphis, around noon last Saturday, the The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office he said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was arrested after a police chase. He was identified as Jackson Hopper – Young’s ex-boyfriend. The 26-year-old is being held in the Shelby County Jail without bail. He was charged with first-degree murder, but additional charges could be added.

A bond hearing is scheduled for October 28. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy will require that the suspect not be given bail because of the seriousness of the crime.

He also faces charges in several other counties related to the police chase.

Internal reviews of the arrest are also being conducted after cell phone video showed officers appearing to punch Hopper. He appears to have sustained injuries in his booking photo.

A candlelight vigil for the victim was held Tuesday night in nearby Halls, Tenn., drawing a crowd of hundreds.

He was young a first year student to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and aspired to be a doctor, friends said.
